As part of our community involvement, we sponsor two elementary schools in Fairfax County that hold Title I designations. Title I is a federal grant. The purpose of this legislation is "to provide all children significant opportunities to receive a fair, equitable, and high-quality education, and to close educational achievement gaps. Title I elementary schools receive funds that are used for staff and resources to meet the needs of their students and families. Schools are identified for Title I funds based on the percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price meals.
The two Title I schools that FCFCU participates with are:
Herndon Elementary School: as an official sponsor of the school we donate funds that financially assist the school’s PTA in the development of various community events. The credit union has guided the school towards creating their PTA’s website. The credit union also sponsors the school’s annual 1K obstacle run and other events which raise money for the school that solely relies on volunteers and sponsors in order to be able to offer programs that are comparable to non-Title I schools in the area.

Lynbrook Elementary School: FCFCU sponsors a mentor program where FCFCU staff volunteers weekly by meeting with students for lunch and discussions during the school year as part of our ongoing Lynbrook School support program. We also sponsor the school’s website. The school relies on volunteers and partners from the community. This diverse school has over 75% of its students learning English as a second language and more than 80% students receiving reduced cost lunches. The PTA therefore relies solely on gifts from the community and fundraising efforts to provide extracurricular activities, field trips and events.
