An Unexpected Lesson In The Value of Being Prepared

The old scouting motto, “Be Prepared,” was once again proved correct as we dealt with an unexpected event at the Credit Union this summer.

As you may know, there was a fire at our Fairfax branch in July. I’m happy to report that the event (which occurred in an area of roof repairs), caused no injuries and the Credit Union experienced little interruption in operations. Our doors opened on time the following day and we were back to business as usual very quickly.

It points to the value of being prepared. Thanks to advance planning, we had contingency procedures in place that helped us continue serving our members. We also sincerely thank the firefighters and other public safety personnel who responded so quickly and effectively.

Being prepared is as important for each one of us as it is for an institution like the Credit Union. In financial matters, being prepared can mean the difference between a comfortable life and a life of worry. Here are some ways we help members be prepared in their financial lives:

Savings. Do you have a “rainy day fund”? Are you on track with retirement savings? We can help, with some of the highest rates around on CDs – both regular and IRAs. Members also have access to trust and investment services through the Credit Union.

A financial plan. Do you have a spending and savings plan? We partner with the BALANCE® Financial Fitness Program, which offers free confidential financial counseling to our members. Just call (888) 456-2227 toll-free. Counselors are available 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday (ET).

Insurance. It’s important for your peace of mind, and to protect yourself and your family. Members can obtain group rates through the Credit Union for a variety of insurance plans, including auto, homeowners, life, long term care and GAP for your auto loan.

REPORTED PHISHING SCHEME
March 17, 2014

First Data has learned of a widespread telephone phishing scam. Cardholders may receive what appear to be automated phone calls or texts, telling them that their ATM/Debit cards are locked. The automated message requests call recipients to "Press 1" where they are to enter their 16-digit card number into their telephone key pad. Once this is entered, the scammers are then requesting the card’s Personal Identification Number (PIN). The scam artists are attempting to obtain customer card numbers and PINs in order to gain access to customer accounts via ATMs or POS (point of sale) purchases.

In many cases, phishing scams, whether by phone or through emails, attempt to gain personal information from the call or email recipients such as:

· First and Last Name
· Debit Card or ATM Card Number
· Debit or ATM Card Personal Identification Number (PIN)
· Date of Birth
· Social Security Number
· Account Number and/or Account Type

Additional Tips

  • FCFCU protects its members through fraud monitoring and reissuing of cards if neccessary.
  • We encourage you to review your account statements often.
  • It is recommended that if you are signed up for Online Banking to watch your account transactions daily for any suspicious activities.
  • If you notice unauthorized charges on your credit or debit card, contact us right away to protect your accounts from additional fraudulent acitivity.

Beware of Phishing Scams:

Fairfax County Federal Credit Union will NEVER contact our members via e-mail requesting you provide us with private information. Be aware you could be the target of a Phishing Scam!

Scammers are adding new “bait” to a practice known as “phishing,” in which victims are tricked into revealing personal financial information over the Internet, telephone or other means. The Internal Revenue Service recently warned that citizens should beware of emails regarding a consumer satisfaction survey that promises $80 for participation. By clicking on a link in the email, the user is taken to an official-looking survey that asks for personal contact information and credit card details.

Other IRS-related scams include fake emails promising a tax refund, or reporting an upcoming investigation into the victim’s tax returns – all seeking the victim’s financial information. To avoid phishing schemes, experts say you should not respond to unsolicited emails requesting personal information, and you should not click on links in emails to go to any Web page if you don’t know the sender or suspect that the message may not be authentic.
