How to Get Better Results From Your Disputes

These tips will put you in the best position to protect your accounts, and therefore enable you to get better results in the event of a discrepancy.

 

Purchases

¬ Sign all credit, debit and ATM cards as soon as you receive them. Destroy all old cards.

¬ If you have a question regarding the dollar amount of a purchase, contact the merchant first to resolve it.

¬ If you suspect that your credit or debit card number has been compromised, contact your credit union immediately to have your card number changed.

¬ Never give any information out over the phone to a telemarketer.

¬ Do not give your number to any merchant unless you intend to make a purchase. Once a transaction is made, you can only stop payment on the transaction through the merchant.

¬ Do not share your card information with family members or friends.

¬ Memorize your PIN and do not write it on your card. If you want to change your debit or ATM PIN, you can do so at any  FCFCU branch location.

¬ Always dispute your purchases as soon as you receive your statement, as you only have 60 days to dispute a purchase.

¬If you have a FCFCU VISA, sign up for Verified by Visa to add security to your online transactions.

Cancellations

¬ Cancel all subscriptions, hotel reservations, etc. before the cancellation deadline and keep copies of your cancellation, when possible.

¬ Write down cancellation numbers when they are given, and keep them in a safe place. You will need this number if you ever have to dispute the transaction.

¬ Keep a record of dates and names of individuals you speak to.

Contracts

  ¬ Read the fine print on all contracts.

  ¬ Keep copies of all contracts.

¬ Do not sign a contract until you agree with what is in the contract.

Receipts

¬ Always ask for a receipt if one is not automatically given to you.

¬ Make sure your receipt is complete and accurate before you sign your name.

¬ Keep your receipts until your purchases have been verified.

¬ If you have to pay cash or check due to the merchant experiencing a point-of-sale problem, keep the receipt for verification.

¬ Insist on receiving a return receipt for purchases returned through the mail.

  ¬ Keep notes on all names, dates, and any information you have pertaining to your dispute.
