Fairfax County Federal Credit Union -Our History

Fairfax County Employees Credit Union began operations in April, 1958.  The credit union was established to serve the financial needs of Fairfax County Government employees.  At the onset, the credit union received organizational assistance from the Virginia Credit Union League and due to rapid growth, the credit union was able to hire its first employee in 1959.

As the credit union grew in deposits and loans, additional staff was hired and the credit union moved into its first credit union owned facility in October, 1981.  At that time, the credit union had over $7.5 million dollars in assets.  Around this time, Fairfax County Government began to grow substantially and so did the membership in the credit union.  With the addition of new members and demand for new financial products and services, the credit union outgrew its first facility and began to occupy a new and much larger facility in July, 1992.

At that time, the credit union was growing at over 15% a year and continued to add more services and staff to accommodate the growing membership and met the requirements of a more sophisticated county workforce.  The credit union also began adding small employee groups associated with the municipal government including Fairfax County Water Authority, the Regional Park Authority, Town of Vienna and the Occoquan Regional Water Authority employees.

During the late 1990's the credit union recognized the importance of serving the county's Hispanic workforce with financial services not always available in other financial institutions.  A key component of that outreach to the Hispanic community was to hire bilingual credit union staff members and to provide Spanish language automated services when possible.

By the end of the 1990's the credit union had yet again outgrown its facility and began to look for additional office space.  By early 2000, the credit union had identified a site for a new office to accommodate its contained successful growth.  A new office facility was opened in April 2003.  At that time, the credit union was serving over 17,000 county employees and family members in addition to other affiliated groups.  Assets had reached $120 million dollars and the credit union began offering real estate loans and investment services.  FCFCU had significantly developed its ability to proved financial services to its members, especially reaching out to members in the Hispanic community.  For this reason, a large church community requested that its parishioners, predominantly Spanish speaking, be granted membership.

In July 2004 FCFCU was given approval to become a community chartered credit union serving those who live, work, do business in, worship, attend school and/or volunteer in Fairfax County.  By March 2007 FCFCU had reached more than $230 million dollars in assets while serving over 18,000 members.
